SCRIPTURES 9 – Prophets of the Restoration and Their Teachings

Objectives
– To learn about the past Presidents of the Church, their lives, character, and contributions to the kingdom.
– To briefly peruse the teachings of the past Presidents of the Church.
– To learn about the present fifteen prophets and Apostles, their lives and teachings.

Format
– This course is taken from resources at www.churchofjesuschrist.org.
– The first half covers the past Presidents of the Church.
– The second half covers the current members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve.
– Biographies are official Church biographies.
– Teachings of the current prophets and Apostles are their most recent General Conference talks.

Part One – Past Presidents of the Church

Semester Outline
1 – This portion of the course will take approximately 16 weeks, with an additional two weeks allotted for finals.
2 – Each Prophet will be studied over the course of one week.
3 – How you decide to divide up the material over five days is up to you. This is an advanced study course which requires more self-direction.

Lesson Content for each Prophet:
1 – Accomplish the Introductory portion on the first day. This is a collection of videos, stills, and print which introduce each prophet.
2 – Read the Historical timeline and Life Sketch.
3 – Choose 3 chapters in the book to sample the prophet’s teachings.
4 – Write a brief essay on what impressed you most about the prophet and what teaching impressed you the most.

Part Two – Present Prophets and Apostles of the Church

This portion of the course covers the current fifteen men, those in the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, whom we sustain as “prophets, seers, and revelators”.

Second Semester Outline
1 – This portion of the course will take approximately 16 weeks, with an additional two weeks allotted for finals.
2 – Each Apostle will be studied over the course of one week. How you decide to divide up the material over five days is up to you. This is an advanced study course which requires more self-direction.

Lesson Content for each Apostle:
1 – Biographical and ministerial information. See: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/leadership-and-organization/ and access the bio by clicking on the name of the Apostle. Make notes as to the General Authority’s birth date and place, occupation, education, etc. and his efforts and accomplishments as a Church Authority.
2 – Read or listen to, and make notes on the last four addresses of the Prophet or Apostle gave during the most recent General Conferences. General Conference addresses can be accessed through https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference?lang=eng
3 – Make notes as to the themes, advice, and doctrines expounded. Record any quotes that particularly impress you.
NOTE: Should one or more of the men in the following list be deceased, cross out those deceased and add the new Apostle or Apostles to the end of the list.
