Scriptures 5: The Old Testament, Part One – Moses, Abraham & Genesis through Ecclesiastes
This course covers a read-through of the Books of Moses and Abraham, plus Genesis through Ecclesiates.
In addition to learning about doctrine, about the interaction of Jesus Christ with his people, and about ancient Israel and its prophets, the Old Testament covers some pre and ancient history.
The Old Testament also serves as what was at one time toted as being THE best vocabulary book. It still is and so we use it as such, in addition to its spiritual worth.
To read through Moses, Abraham and Genesis through Proverbs within the school year.
To get a sense of the overall story and message of this portion of the Old Testament.
To learn about the various books and selected persons.
To highlight passages of personal interest and journal impressions, insights, feelings and likenings.
To keep in memory the 10 Commandments.
To memorize 36 additional scripture verses or passages of the student’s choice that have particular
meaning for him.
To increase vocabulary and reading ability. To glean the words not known and learn them.
Markable copy of the Bible and the Pearl of Great Price.
Scripture marker that does NOT bleed through to the back of the page. Colored pencils are good for this.
Index cards for vocabulary words, memory verses and important facts; journal for impressions, insights,
Highlighted copy of the Old Testament; completed journal of impressions, likenings, etc.
Recitation from memory of the full 10 Commandments as recorded in Exodus 20:1–17 & the student’s 36
personally selected scripture memory verses.
Memorization of important facts relating to the books read and selected persons in the books.
Card or notes denoting new vocabulary acquired.
In 5 well-written essays, be able to
o 1) give a synopsis of the contents and your insights from reading Moses, Abraham and the five
books of Moses;
o 2) Joshua through Job;
o 3) Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes.
Memorize the books of the Old Testament in order.
