Background, Instructions, and Rewards Schedule
John A. Widstoe was a University President and an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the 1930s and 1940s.
In a Conference address he encouraged the Saints to read 30 minutes a day. He said that by reading 30 minutes a day a person would acquire an excellent education. He stated that he knew men who had not been to college, but read and were highly educated.
When a student joins the John A. Widstoe Reading Club, he promises to read 30 minutes everyday.
Dr. Ben Carson is a world renowned pediatric brain surgeon, former presidential candidate, and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He founded the Cornerstone Institute through which he works to preserve and return America to its founding principles and beliefs.
When in the fifth grade, Ben was considered the dumbest in his class. His mother prayed about what she could do to help him. The result was limiting the TV watching to 2-3 programs a week, requiring Ben to read two books a week, and then writing a report on each book. It changed his life.
When a student joins the Dr. Ben Carson Reading Club, he promises to read and report on two books a week.
